About Summer Art Classes for Kids
Children of all ages love making art. It is inherent in their being. For almost all of them you can put art materials in front of them and they fearlessly create. In these art camps we try to take what is already there in the child and strengthen that flame, to build that strength in making art and so it can be kept alive through possible future years of self judgment—the feelings of I can’t do this, I can't draw!
All our projects are designed to be fun. The assignments are a beginning, a guideline to start into art—however within each assignment, students are encouraged to make it their own, they are free to explore their own creativity—the best way to learn about any new medium. At this stage of an artist’s life, having fun creating art is the best way to foster a life-long love and appreciation.
At the end of each week, your child comes home with a portfolio of work. In my experience, the best way for parents (and family and friends) to strengthen the artistic flame is to non-judgmentally praise the work, and spend some time with your child discussing what the method was, how the art was made. There is no right or wrong in art — and guaranteed no matter what their age your child will bring back a portfolio to be proud of! While the focus of camp is art, the kids have lots of fun throughout the week. There are playground games and activities that they choose from, plus a library. My assistants find ways to help the kids blow off steam. There’s lots of laughter coming from the schoolyard during breaks in the day.
